WHAT DRIVES ME?

Hey, I’m Daniel and I really like building things, solving problems, and learning random things. I built my first company in high school, followed by 5 more over the course of the last 11 years, with 2 exits. Not all of them worked out, but the process has taught me a few things about forestry, healthcare, marketing, and, most importantly, how important it is for me to never stop discovering/learning.

Beyond trying to tackle big problems with untraditional solutions, my curiosity and passion for discovery have brought me to really appreciate the outdoors, where I love connecting with others with similar values while recharging myself.

Sharing my learnings is something I’m always stoked to do, and believe that passing stories and ideas along is what keeps our world moving forwards. So feel free to hit me up if you think I can help you build, or if you’re just genuinely curious about anything!

In all seriousness, one of the most valuable skills in the backcountry to me is learning how to fall. Last year, I was on a ridge and rolled my ankle when I landed on a loose rock. If I didn’t drop my center of gravity and go straight down, I likely would have lost my balance and fallen off the mountain, which would not have been fun (or survivable likely). This is even more important when you’re skiing or mountaineering…it’s important to get comfortable self arresting / falling in sketchy terrain. I know this sounds like a really weird thing to practice and doesn’t sound like a skill, but it’s important!

Currently at just around 2 months and the ascent felt good, especially with the running poles. As expected, the descent proved to be a little bit more challenging given my new ACL and repaired meniscus still require 9 more months of healing and my left quad is still a 3.5cm smaller than my normal quad / calves are at a 1cm differential.

No more brace which means the hard work starts now! For the next two weeks, we’ll be working on rebuilding quad strength and balance. We’ll also touch a bit on Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) and how that may or may not help with rehab after a knee surgery! (Week 5)

3️⃣ Sahale Glacier: The Sahale Glacier trail is a tough 19.3-kilometer round trip that takes you through diverse landscapes, including lush meadows and rugged alpine terrain, with a camp site at the Sahale Glacier. Offering unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, this hike is a classic of the North Cascades National Park but must be booked in advance to camp!

Last week, I was finally able to get my first dose

Last week, I was finally able to get my first dose of the mountains in 6 weeks. Even though it was a small hike, it made me so happy to just spend summer solstice outside, on some rocks with the crew. It’s a moment that I’ll never forget, and one that really reminded me of how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful place and to be able to access the mountains with relative ease. It’ll still be quite some time before I can go for longer hikes into the backcountry, but I’m grateful to be able to get into the mountains at all!

Can’t stress the last one enough! As a super act

Can’t stress the last one enough! As a super active person, getting outside and exercising IS my life and so 6 weeks of not being able to do that was tough.

Here are some ways to stay positive that really helped me:

1️⃣: Planning hangouts with friends before the surgery for the first few days after. Having people come to rot with you in the couch binging MILF manor certainly helps to take your mind off the crappy parts of recovery!

2️⃣: Schedule your first physio appointment as soon as possible (5 days for me) so that you’ve got an action plan. Having a plan with tangible milestones to focus on really helps the mind! My physio was really helpful with finding creative ways to get exercise while keeping that meniscus protected!

3️⃣: Planning into the future. I booked a hiking trip for a timeframe that I was confident in (with advice from my surgeon and physio). This gave me something to look forwards to, another thing that really helps them mind sharing the low parts of recovery where you might feel like you’re just rotting.
